Still a little bit of a WIP, but I've been having fun creating characters in Illustrator for an extremely short animated short I'm working on.

I've included the color version as well as the paths. I've found that I prefer standard gradients as opposed to gradient meshes. Probably a little messier, judging from the paths, but it works well for me.

I've always preferred true gradients to gradient meshes. Since most of the stuff I work on go to print as well gradient meshes reek havoc on separation files. Pretty much the gradient meshes and all of those other "fun" filters and effects in Illustrator were put in there for web only based end needs. They never factored in print as well and just tried to emulate Photoshop. In my opinion if you need almost photo quality gradients you should be using Photoshop anyways. In the end I think artwork that was created in Illustrator needs to LOOK like it was created there. That's kind of the fun of it to me. Giving yourself limitations by using the program and then finding ways to make those limitations work or work around them. Again, just my 2 cents.

AWESOME animation by the way and good luck with this piece as well. I love the expression on his face.

It's a limited animation style - at least for the secondary characters. You can view the WIP here: [link]

This will essentially be keyframe A. I'll also take the time to fully illustrate keyframe B. It'll take some testing but I use a little squash/stretch and motion blur between the keyframes. If I need to I might do a couple of quick, "fakey" tweens in photoshop. We'll see how it goes! If had relative success with this technique in the past, as you can see with the frog in the above link.

Aaaah I had to do similar type of animation with cutted out photos to fit well with 3D renders. It's fun.

Well, keep it up, this one should look pretty interesting.

Wow, this looks amazing! Gradient meshes are something I'm a bit timid of in Illustrator, but this looks almost paintless.

While gradient meshes are fun and all, I typical don't use them. Only in cases where I just absolutely can't get the effect I'm going for with standard gradients. Illustrator CS 4+ has this fantastic ability to allow the user to not only select the gradient colors but opacities as well. This, coupled with the blur filter and clipping masks is my standard recipe for some nice, convincing vector rendering.
